A dog named Molly is running for mayor of Toronto in the municipal elections being held in the Canadian city. The unusual candidate is running for public office alongside her guardian and climate activist Toby Heaps.

Molly is a 6-year-old wolf-husky dog ​​born in Sochi, Russia.

Speaking to the BBC, Toby said he was officially running for mayor of Toronto. Molly the dog will be named the first honorary canine mayor.

“I think the city council would make better decisions if there was an animal in the room,” he told the UK state network.

Molly and Toby’s main agendas are environmental. In the campaign, they propose solving homelessness, raising taxes on billionaire corporations, and banning the use of fossil fuel-based heating systems in new homes and commercial buildings.

The Toronto mayoral election comes after former mayor John Tory resigned following revelations of an extramarital affair. Adding to the scandal, the politician has been criticized by locals for increasing social inequality across the city.

A total of 102 candidates are vying for the vacant post of mayor of Canada’s largest city. In addition to the favorites to be voted on, there are available to voters entering the voting booths a range of not-so-traditional contestants, personalities like a comedian and even a teenager who has just left school.

To run for mayor, any citizen residing in Toronto only needs 25 signatures and pays a fee of 250 Canadian dollars (about R$ 900).
