Brazil debut with AmeriCup victory beating Canada

Brazil beat Canada in their AmeriCup debut after going 72-63 in a strong game in Recife. Hosting the tournament after 38 years, the Arena Geraldão, in Recife, is the scene of the competition which runs until September 11.

The highlights of the match for our selection were Yago with 13 points, 3 rebounds and 1 assist, Leo Meindl with 11 points, 9 rebounds and 2 assists, Georginho with 10 points and 4 assists, Lucas Dias with 9 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists and Marcelinho Huertas with 9 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists.

For Canada, Dalano Banton, a Toronto Raptors player, led Canada to the loss with 20 points and 11 rebounds, the game’s scorer. Canada struggled to shoot from outside the arc, shooting 3 of 28. Brazil had a 17-9 lead in assists as nine different players recorded at least one assist.

Brazil started the match with the quintet: Georginho, Marcelinho Huertas, Lucas Dias, Cristiano Felício and Didi. The starting point was given by the Canadian team, but Brazil set the tone for the game and in the first five minutes opened a 3-point lead.

The Canadian team put the pressure on in the final minutes of the first quarter, but Brazil charged in with a good attack that was fundamental to finalizing the first quarter which ended 17-15.

In the second period, Canada controlled the first minutes of the match, but the Brazilian marking prevented the three balls of the opposing team. The Canadian team, which has a younger team, did not lose the rhythm of the match and did not tire in the attempts to pass the marker.

Georginho netted a three-pointer leaving Brazil more comfortable with a six-point lead. The Brazilian defensive rebound helped in the final minutes and Brazil finished the second period winning 32-24, with Yago and Leo Meindl as highlights.

Coach Gustavinho designed the attacking round well and the Brazilian team started the third period well. In the first minutes, Brazil did not give confidence to the Canadian team and, with greater imposition, provided security inside the corridor.

The early psychological pressure didn’t let Brazil lose focus throughout the match, although Canada came back recovered and reduced the lead on the scoreboard. The period ended in 50 to 46.

The last quarter did not have a much different scenario. Lucas Dias opened up space and controlled Brazil’s poor moment with a three-pointer in the opening minutes of the game. In a more balanced way, the Canadians won leaving the score at 54 to 53 in the first five minutes of the match.

Leo Meindl, with a two-point ball, went on the scoreboard again, again leaving the Brazilian team in front. Lucas Dias and Yago made the difference in the last minutes and gave the team a 10-point lead. A period practically decided in detail, Brazil supported by green and yellow supporters kept the race and won 72-63.
