Canada announced on Wednesday (7) a new Canadian $2 coin honoring Queen Elizabeth II for her 70 years as head of state.
“She is the only monarch many Canadians have ever known,” reads the message from the Royal Canadian Mint on her Instagram profile.
The coin has a black band on the edge, which represents mourning for the loss of the Queen, and also outlines the image of her face. On the back there is the traditional polar bear, also underlined by the black band.
“Like her own effigy, the late Queen was a constant presence in the lives of Canadians, who will always be remembered for her unwavering dedication to public service and her deep affection for Canada.”
Nearly five million coins will be distributed in December and will gradually become part of citizens’ daily lives. The Royal Canadian Mint guarantees that, if necessary, additional volumes can be produced.
Queen Elizabeth II died on September 8, aged 96, at Balmoral Castle, Scotland, and was the longest-serving British monarch in history. His heir, King Charles III, will be crowned in London on May 6, 2023.
The Queen led the Commonwealth, a group of 53 countries originating from the British Empire. Between them, she ruled over 15 countries, including Canada, which will now have Charles III as king.
