Canada (Group F). Dream heroes over 30 (with plenty of Portuguese flair in the mix) – Observer

36 years later, Canada is at the World Championship. The Canadian team had made only one appearance in the final of the biggest international competition, in Mexico and in 1986, and already made history just by qualifying for the World Cup in Qatar. More than three decades later, maple syrup country will show that Canadian sport is not just ice hockey.

With Alphonso Davies as the absolute reference of the team, it is a selection which also lives on the efficiency of Jonathan David, the individual quality of Cyle Larin and the experience of captain Atiba Hutchinson. Luso-Canadians Steven Vitória and Stephen Eustáquio are regulars in England’s John Herdman’s starting XI — who made the unusual journey of moving from the New Zealand and Canadian women’s teams to the Canadian men’s team.

Inserted in a complex group, where Belgium and Croatia start as the natural candidates for qualification and Morocco has another international experience, Canada will be looking forward to the best result of all time at the World Championships. The mere fact that they arrived in Qatar, however, was an impressive show of strength from the Canadians.
