Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said this Wednesday (22) that Ottawa and Washington are negotiating to stem the flow of asylum seekers from the United States to Canada,
Hundreds of people cross the border irregularly via the Roxham Road crossing into the province of Quebec every month to seek refuge in Canada, and Trudeau has rejected calls from local authorities and the conservative opposition to block the place.
The Prime Minister considered “simplistic” the idea of the leader of the opposition, the conservative Pierre Poilievre, to create barricades to block the passage.
“If anyone really wants to fix the problem, they have to roll up their sleeves and get to work, that’s what we’re doing,” he added.
In 2022, approximately 40,000 people crossed irregularly from the United States to Canada via Roxham Road to seek asylum. The pace of arrivals at Roxham Road has accelerated in recent months since New York City began paying for bus tickets for refugees to travel to the border.
On Tuesday, the Quebec government said the irregular influx of thousands of asylum seekers was causing a crisis and the province was unable to support new arrivals.
Quebec Premier Francois Legault also accused Trudeau of being behind the crisis, inviting people from around the world fleeing conflict and persecution to seek refuge in the country in 2017.
