Canada one game away from 100% in team sports at Sochi 2014 Olympics | Numerologists Blog

The Winter Olympics are coming to a close in Sochi, Russia. And on the final day, Canada could achieve an unprecedented feat by becoming the first country to win all the gold medals in team sports at one edition of the Games. To do this, they must beat Sweden, current world champions, in the men’s hockey final. Olympic ice tournaments include hockey and curling competitions with men’s and women’s matches. These four medals have been at stake since 1998, in Nagano, Japan.

Before that, since Chamonix 1924, in France, only men’s ice hockey was on the official program. It is important to note, however, that during the first edition, there was a men’s curling tournament won by Great Britain. But it was only in Nagano that curling entered the Olympics once and for all, just like women’s hockey.

The most traditional conflict and rightly champion which remains to be defined in Sochi, men’s hockey could still consecrate the Canadians as the greatest Olympic champions of this sport. For now, the North American country has eight Olympic titles (including the 1920 Summer Olympics in Antwerp, Belgium) compared to eight for the Soviet Union (adding to the 1992 feat of the CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States), formed by the former Soviet Union republics). The Swedish challengers have already reached the highest place on the podium twice: in 1994 and 2006.

In women’s ice hockey, which had a thrilling final with a Canadian victory against the United States, the two North Americans won gold in five years. The Canadians are currently four-time champions compared to only one American title, during the first confrontation in 98.

Gold at Canadian Curling Celebration in SochiIn men’s curling, Canada won its third consecutive Olympic title in the current edition. Before that, in addition to the British in 24, the Swiss and Norwegians also had champion teams. Among the women, the competition is tough between Canada and Sweden with two titles each and one for Great Britain in the middle. And the Canadians failed to achieve the feat of four gold medals in team sports at the Vancouver 2010 Games because of Sweden in women’s curling, who beat the hosts in the final.

Canada’s progress toward achieving this feat has been evident since 1998 to the present. In Japan, they won a team sport, two in the following two editions and three at home. Three other gold medals were won on Russian soil and the fourth could cap a brilliant campaign for the Canadians. In 2018, in PyeongChang, South Korea, the challengers will pursue him.
