Oh Minister of Immigration of Canada said on Thursday 21 that the The country will set targets to reduce the number of new temporary residents in the countryThe federal government plans to reduce the number of temporary employees from the current number. 6.2% of the population to 5% in the next three yearsto an unprecedented extent in the country, according to Minister Marc Miller.
Canada has seen a sharp increase in the number of temporary residents each year, and the minister has said in the past that the country has become “addicted” to temporary workers. As such, the country would limit the entry of international students, as well as foreign workers and asylum seekers. The first targets for this reduction will be set in September.
According to the BBC, under the new policy, officials reported that some Canadian companies will have to reduce the number of temporary foreign workers and will have a shorter period of time to prove that those jobs cannot be filled by a permanent resident or a Canadian citizen. There will be exceptions, however, for workers in the construction and health care sectors, who are facing labour shortages in Canada.
In January, the country announced a two-year limit on international student visas to ease pressure on housing, health care and other services at a time of record immigration. Canada welcomed about 1 million people last year, to a record 40 million, as many Canadians grapple with rising living costs, including rent and mortgages.
“We now find ourselves in a different economic situation,” said Employment Minister Randy Boissonnault.
Miller said he will convene a meeting of provincial, territorial and federal ministers in May to discuss how the levels should be set. He also asked his department to review existing programs that accommodate temporary residents to better align them with employment needs and eliminate abuses in the system.
