Canada records record temperature of 46.6°C; heat wave also hits northwestern United States | World

The small town of Lytton, in the Canadian province of British Columbia, recorded this Sunday (27) a 46.6°C heat. This is the highest temperature recorded in the history of the Canadaaccording to local weather agencies.

The heat caused inconveniences like a power outage, which left hundreds of people without power in British Columbia. Some schools have decided not to open this week. Authorities are on alert for possible fires and hospitalizations due to high temperatures, which mainly affect the elderly.

According to broadcaster CTV, in the Vancouver area, dozens of people were left outside a vaccination post against the coronavirus — in heat over 40°C — due to a change in the place of application of these doses.

The northwest of the United States also recorded record temperatures, and the meteorological authorities themselves recognize that this time the heat is “unprecedented”, “abnormal” and “dangerous”.

Due to this heat wave, this afternoon’s practice at the US Track and Field Trials for the tokyo olympic games had to be postponed to night. The event takes place in Eugene, Oregon, where thermometers have set a record high temperature in the city: 43.3°C.

Authorities are on high alert as forecasts call for more heat across the western United States in the coming days, including other states like Idaho. There are fears of large forest fires and hospitalizations of the elderly affected by temperatures well above normal.
