Canadians trying to save money by buying chicken or eggs in the neighboring country can no longer cross the border for this purpose, because their country restricts imports of poultry products from several American states.
The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) has issued a statement warning that all poultry products and by-products that are not fully cooked, canned or hermetically sealed from “restricted areas” cannot be imported into Canada.
According to the statement, the ban stems from measures implemented by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) to protect Canada’s poultry resources from reported outbreaks of avian influenza in birds in the listed states.
Residents who choose to purchase US poultry or eggs should ensure they have proof that the items were purchased and purchased in a different area than the restricted areas, the CBSA says.
The Agency adds that these measures are an integral part of disease control efforts in Canada. There is no food safety risk associated with these products, but these measures are being taken to prevent the introduction of avian influenza into Canada.
