Malaga (Spain) – The dream of an unprecedented Davis Cup victory continues for Canada. Three years after their second against Spain, the Canadians are back in the semi-finals. After one win for each team in singles matches against Germany on Thursday, the Canadians defined the matchup as a doubles. Vasek Pospisil and Denis Shapovalov beat Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz 2/6, 6/3, 6/3.

Canada has two Davis Cup finals in history, the first in 1913 and the campaign will not be repeated until 2019. They will face Italy in the semi-final next Saturday in Malaga. The Italians have only one title, won in 1973. The other semi-final will take place this Friday, between Australia and Croatia.

The close game between Germany and Canada had started with Jan-Lennard Struff’s 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (7-2) victory over Denis Shapovalov, but world number 6 Felix Auger-Aliassime tied the streak beating Oscar Otte 7/6 (7-1) 6/4.

In the doubles match, the Germans started by dropping two break points and had two breaks throughout the partial. But after that, the Canadian duo served very well. Pospisil and Shapovalov only faced one more break point until the end of the match, they managed the only break in the second set and two more in the third.
