The President of the Republic, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), spoke this Tuesday (13), by telephone, with the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, and one of the main topics was the current political situation in Venezuela.

During the phone call, the PT member analyzed that “there is a history of mistakes by the international community” in relation to its neighbor, citing as an example the sanctions imposed and the recognition of Juan Guaidó as president of Venezuela, in 2019.

Lula also highlighted to the Canadian Prime Minister the efforts of Brazil, Colombia and Mexico to try to normalize the situation in Caracas.

“The most important thing is to keep South America free from conflict, in prosperity and harmony,” the president said.

Trudeau, in turn, would have reinforced his support for Brazil’s efforts to achieve democracy and transparency in elections in Venezuela, in addition to the quest to promote dialogue and the predominance of the rule of law.

Finally, the PT member invited the head of government to a meeting against extremism scheduled on the sidelines of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly, as part of a joint initiative with Pedro Sánchez, Spanish Prime Minister.
