Canadian company opens protected fertilizer plant

Sollio Agriculture opened the CRF Agritech plant for the production of controlled release fertilizers in Saint Thomas, Ontario, Canada.

The project was launched in 2021 after Sollio Agriculture entered into a joint venture with several of its cooperatives in Quebec. CRF Agritech is currently the only manufacturing facility in Canada capable of manufacturing custom controlled release fertilizer (CRF) formulations using Pursell’s proprietary coating technology.

Covering an area of 2,400 square meters, the new controlled-release fertilizer production plant required an investment of more than $18.6 million.

Manufacturing of these controlled-release technology fertilizers will be aimed at farmers throughout eastern Canada and the northeastern United States. At full capacity, the plant will produce more than 100,000 tonnes per year.

According to the International Fertilizer Association (IFA), the use of coated fertilizers is able to reduce the amount of fertilizer needed by 20 to 30% compared to traditional products.

Controlled release technology is used to apply a coating to fertilizer granules with the ability to add micronutrients and biostimulants, allowing a gradual release of nutrients into the soil, timed according to the individual needs of each crop.
