Still in preparation for the Canadian GP, the F1 drivers took to the track this Saturday (18) for the third free practice session on the Gilles-Villeneuve circuit.
In the pouring rain, Fernando Alonso set the fastest time of the day, 1min33s836. The lead alternated between the Alpine rider and the equally experienced Sebastian Vettel for most of the race. However, AlphaTauri’s Pierre Gasly dropped to second place, leaving Vettel with the third best mark.
Red Bull drivers Max Verstappen and Sérgio Perez opted to time the laps with just five minutes to go in practice. Verstappen, who led free practice on Friday (17) and is the championship leader, finished third of them in 9th.
Lewis Hamilton had problems with the Mercedes car. In this last formation, he was 15th. George Russell, his teammate, achieved a more satisfying result by reaching the sixth best mark.
Ferrari decided to change Charles Leclerc’s engine – which was already having problems during the last tests. The driver will start last in the race on Sunday (19). It was the Monegasque who was the only one to threaten Verstappen’s lead in Saturday’s second training session, just 80 milliseconds behind the Red Bull athlete.
The rain that took hold of the last free practice sessions this afternoon should not be repeated on Sunday during the race. That’s what he says weather forecast to the Canadian city. Even today, the drivers return to the track at 5:00 p.m. for qualifying which defines the starting grid.
