Canadian newspaper claims Meghan and Harry are not welcome in the country – Entertainment

Canada’s most widely circulated newspaper, The Globe and Mail, has published an editorial attacking Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s decision to move to the country, as reported after the couple decided to step down from their royal duties. According to the newspaper, they are welcome to visit Canadians, but not live there.

The newspaper mocks the monarchy: the English monarchy, which reigns but does not govern, and the Canadian monarchy, which does neither: there is a constitutional monarchy there, headed by Queen Elizabeth II. Faced with this, the Globe and Mail asserts that “the answer from Justin Trudeau’s government should be simple and succinct: no.”

“You are welcome as long as you are royal, but Canada cannot allow you to stay,” the editorial states.

For the daily, any mix weakens the current Canadian government. The editorial comments on a report that Ottawa agreed to pay for the couple’s security, which was denied by Finance Minister Bill Morenau. And it emphasizes that money is only a minor aspect in this equation.

“Members of the royal family living in the country would not be in keeping with the nature of the current relationship between Canada and the United Kingdom, between Canada and the Crown.” The Globe and Mail explains that while Canadians have imported much from the British, the evolution of their government has moved them away from the aristocracy and given them independence.

“The Sussexes are trying to resolve their personal issues and Canadians wish them well. Canada welcomes people of all faiths, nationalities and races, but it cannot welcome a senior member of the Royal Family. (…) Canada cannot be a home for those who want to leave the United Kingdom, but remain members of the Royal Family,” the text adds.
