About 24 hours after disappearing on the Argentinian side of the Iguazu Falls, the body of a Canadian tourist in his 60s was found by authorities on Tuesday (18).
It was found in the Brazilian part of the waterfall, in Foz do Iguaçu (PR). The disappearance took place in the area of the Salto Bossetti viewpoint, located in the state of Misiones, in the neighboring country.
According to information from the Argentine newspaper Clarín, the local town hall and the company that organizes tourist visits to the park carried out a general search on the river and in the city of Puerto Iguazú until they found it.
Marcelo Gione, municipal director of the tourist entity of Iguaçu, confirmed to the Argentine vehicle Cadena 3 that the body found is that of the missing man. “Yesterday [na terça-feira, 18] we learned from the photos and videos sent to us that the body belongs to the person who threw himself. It is a regrettable fact. It is now up to the judiciary to investigate under what circumstances this person fell into the water,” he said.
Police are working with reports of people who saw the tourist climb onto the balcony railing at Bosetti Falls to take a photo – a group was touring the scene, but the Canadian was not together. None of them have testified so far.
Authorities are also reviewing security camera footage from the park’s access area.
An alleged photo of the man as he fell into the river and was pushed by the current has been circulating on social media. The place has a very intense water flow and it would be almost impossible to escape in the event of a fall. But, according to Clarín, it has not yet been possible to confirm the veracity of the image.
