Djordje Mihailovic, one of the best young players in MLS, will stay at CF Montreal until the end of the 2022 season, then join AZ Alkmaar/HOL
CF Montreal has reached an agreement to sell attacking midfielder Djordje Mihailovic to AZ Alkmaar of the Netherlands. The club announced the sale of the player for 6 million dollars, including add-ons. The Canadian club will also maintain a future sale clause. Chicago Fire F.C. will receive 10% of the transfer fee as he upheld the sell clause when transferring Mihailovic from Chicago to Montreal ahead of the 2021 MLS season.
Djordje will end the season with CF Montreal, which remains well placed in the playoffs and intends to fight for the MLS Cup. The youngster will report to the Dutch squad from January 1, 2022.

“It’s a very emotional moment for me, but also sad, knowing that I will be leaving CF Montreal,” said Mihailovic. “When I joined this Chicago team, I didn’t expect this kind of welcome. I want to thank the fans for their support. It was an incredible experience.
Journalist Tom Bogert previously reported that the youngster was reportedly forfeited from the game against New England Revolution on 08/20 as he traveled to Holland in order to finalize negotiation procedures with AZ Alkmaar.
Djordje Mihailovic, 23, has had a great run since joining CF Montreal, scoring 11 goals and 20 assists in 54 games (50 as a starter). He was a star under coach Wilfried Nancy. Early in his career with the Chicago Fire, the youngster scored seven goals and provided 14 assists in 73 regular season games.
“Europe has been his dream for many years and I am happy that we can contribute to his career goals. This agreement suits Djordje well. It is a club he wanted to be a part of and where his qualities and his style of game can be fully realized,” said CF Montreal sporting director Oliver Renard.
The move to the Dutch league is a good entry point for Mihailovic, the Dutch league is known to be a great development platform for young players. He will join other players who left MLS for Eredvise, Colorado Rapids midfielder Cole Bassett (on loan to Fortuna Sittard) and former San Jose Earthquakes left-back Marcos Lopez (transferred to Feyenoord).
Djordje Mihailovic may not be the only youngster to switch from CF Montreal to European football as a Canadian midfielder Ismael Kone has sparked club interest in the Old continent. At the beginning of the summer, CF Montreal even accepted a six million dollar offer from Norwich City/ING for Kone, but the negotiation between the athlete and the English team did not progress and he remained at the Canadian club.
