atypical case
Agriculture Minister Carlos Fávaro told the GloboNews that tests carried out at the reference laboratory of the World Organization for Animal Health in Alberta, Canada, have confirmed that the the case is atypical.
For the laboratory, the disease is the result of the natural aging of the animal. In practice, this means that the report has confirmed the expectation of the dossier that there is no risk of contamination of the herd.
The animal detected by mad cow was a 9-year-old bull raised on pasture. The animal was put down, cremated and the property isolated.
After confirming the report to GloboNewsthe Ministry of Agriculture issued a note highlighting that the sample result was immediately communicated to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) and the portfolio initiated the process of official communication to the World Food Organization animal health.
The ministry will also send the Canadian lab’s report to the Chinese government and request a virtual meeting to discuss lifting the embargo.
Fávaro said he was working to resume trade “as soon as possible” and that the federal government intended to activate new refrigeration facilities after Lula’s trip to China in late March.
In 20 years of surveillance of the disease, the country has never identified the most traditional form, the one where the animal is contaminated because of its food, explained Vanessa Felipe de Souza Veterinarian, Virologist, Researcher at Embrapa Gado de Corte.
