Always celebrated on November 4, Favela Day is a day of reflection that celebrates power, resilience, representativeness, entrepreneurial capacity and cultural strength. The day is chosen because the term favela first appeared in an official document on November 4, 1900 referring to the inhabitants of what is now Morro da Providencia in downtown Rio de Janeiro.
According to a survey carried out by Data Favela, in partnership with the Locomotiva Institute and the Central Única das Favelas (Cufa), Brazil currently has 13,151 favelas, double the number recorded in 2012, during the first survey of this model. The survey also reveals that there are more than 5 million households and 17.7 million people residing in areas called “favelas”.
This year, to celebrate Favelas Day, Cufa is carrying out a great cultural activity at its headquarters, in Viaduto de Madureira, and will support a series of others, in several favelas of the state, in collaboration with other institutions. On the program, festivities, debates, conferences, sports and educational activities.
“It’s a day that marks when we organize to show the power that our territory and our people possess! We are going to carry out various cultural, sporting and entrepreneurial actions in various favelas of our State”says Elaine Caccavo, production manager at CUFA.

For Celso Athayde, founder of Cufa, favelas are spaces of power and survival. Places where the inhabitants are the protagonists of the whole production process. “Favela Day is not a date to celebrate its existence. But to reflect on everything that is happening in this territory. And yes, we celebrate the resilience that its inhabitants have to face the problems imposed on a daily basis. And the strength and power that these people show, even with all the difficulties”emphasizes the founder of Favela Day.
At Viaduto de Madureira, starting at 11 a.m., there will be a great presentation of the institution’s workshops, such as capoeira, percussion, dance and sewing. In addition to a jump jump for children to have fun. For more information visit the Instagram profile from Cufa Rio.
