Decarbonizing the economy is the challenge of the century

“Decarbonization is the challenge of our century,” said Ursula von der Leyen, also referring to the need to move to a green economy, based on clean and competitive industries.

Currently, as Von der Leyen pointed out, “it’s all about access to technology, access to raw materials and increasing production, so the common goal must be the development of capabilities in terms of clean technology”.

In a joint press conference with the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, the leader of the Community executive indicated that this objective will be discussed at the summit of the leaders of the G7 (to be held from May 19 to 21 in Hiroshima ), since the ecology of the transition must be a joint effort and not “at the expense of the other”.

The G7 brings together the world’s seven largest economies and is made up of Germany, Canada, the United States, France, Italy, Japan and the United Kingdom, with the European Union (EU) participating also at group meetings.

The EU will take part in three summits in the coming days: the Council of Europe, in Iceland (Tuesday and Wednesday), the G7, in Japan, and the EU/Korea, in Seoul (22 May).

With regard to the ongoing war in Ukraine, which will be the main topic on the agenda of the Reykjavík meeting — which will also be attended by Portuguese Prime Minister António Costa — the EU supports the creation of a specific tribunal to try crimes of aggression.
