Of the four rounds of the Monster Energy Tour International Major in Quebec City, PRB Canada Iron Cowboy Derek Kolbaba (call photo) of Walla Walla, Wash., emerged victorious in three. He won the event for the second time in his career and added points to the Professional Bull Riders world standings. The event, with a different format, was held on May 4, with the 23-year-old cowboy posting the best score in the first round, 86 points, Applause, from Vold Rodeo. It was a “déjà vu” for Kolbaba, who also won the first round in 2017, when he won the inaugural PBR event at the Videotron Centre. After all 20 athletes performed, with nine earning a score, they moved on to the second round and the finals. In the top eight, Kolbaba was competing against Brennon Eldred (Sulphur, Okla.), Zane Lambert (Ponoka, Alta.), Keyshawn Whitehorse (McCracken Springs, Utah), Scottie Knapp (Edgewood, N.M.), Tanner Byrne (Prince Albert, Sask.), Lonnie West (Cadogan, Alta.) and Shay Marks (Sunnybrook, Alta.). Derek Kolbaba at One For The Money in the fourth round, when he won the $20,000 bonus
In the second round, he was again the best, scoring 86 points on Dylan’s Devil of Wild Hoggs Bucking Bulls. Same score as Southern Heat, of Vold Rodeo. Kolbaba led the event, while Eldred was second. The top four advance to the third round. In addition to the two already mentioned, two-time PBR Canada champion Lambert, as well as rookie of the year Whitehorse. The four were the only ones to stop in the second round. Not so with their third mount. None managed to stop the bulls. To decide the two finalists, the time criterion was used. And the two who stayed the longest with the animals in the third round were Kolbaba and Eldred. To be called a “steel cowboy”, the athlete absolutely must have a perfect night. And the title went to Kolbaba. He scored 88 points aboard Vold Rodeo’s One for the Money, while Eldred fell in 3.86 seconds to Wild Hoggs/Corey Chmelnyk’s Tykro Pound Sand. The maximum score and the entire prize pool of $32,387.01, including the $20,000 bonus, went to Kolbaba. In the PBR Canada standings, he scored 680 points, reaching third place. In the world standings, there were 350 points, moving him from 11th to seventh. Kolbaba is now 1,360 points behind the No. 1, Brazil’s José Vitor Leme.Adriano Salgado
The four finalists were scored. Eldred, second, earned 320 points for PBR Canada and 130 for the world championship, reaching 29th position. Lambert was the best performing Canadian, finishing in third place, adding 50 points for PBR Canada and ten points for the world ranking. Finally, Whitehorse finished the stage in fourth place, collecting 40 points for PBR Canada and ten points for the world championship. Marco Antônio Eguchi was the only Brazilian to participate in this stage, but he did not score. The same weekend, but in the United States, in Touring Pro, the third division of the PBR, Brazilian Adriano Salgado won his first victory outside of Brazil. Won the stage in Uvalde, Texas. In the same rodeo, Alan de Souza came in third place. Since there was no main division stage, some competitors were present at this rodeo. And they scored, Eduardo Aparecido in fourth place and Alisson de Souza in fifth place. The next stop of Unleash The Beast will be in Albuquerque, New Mexico, from May 17 to 19.
