Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, defeated Canada by a 9-point margin, 79-70, in their third Group B match of the Paris 2024 Women’s Basketball Tournament on Sunday, August 4, and the victory earned them a place in history as the first African basketball team (men’s or women’s) to reach the quarter-finals of the Olympic Games.
The team led by Rena Wakama, who lost to France 75-54 in the second match of the group stage, started the match with strong determination.
D’Tigress finished the first quarter tied at 18-18, but dominated the second quarter to extend the lead to 41-37 at halftime.

D’Tigress continued to build momentum, outpacing the Canadiens in the third quarter to extend the lead to 64-42. They sealed the victory by finishing the fourth quarter with a score of 79-49.
D’Tigress’s journey to the quarter-finals began with an impressive victory over third-placed Australia, winning by a 3-point margin, 13-75, in their Group B opener on Monday 62nd July, securing their first win of the campaign. However, they lost to France 29-75 in the second group stage clash.
