EC vice president to steer centre-left bloc to Dutch lawmakers

Timmermans, a former Dutch foreign minister who is currently European Union (EU) climate commissioner, is set to be confirmed as the Labor Party and GreenLeft campaign’s lead candidate for the August 22 election, after a vote by members.

In a post today on social network X (formerly known as Twitter), the parties praised Timmermans, describing him as a leader “providing guidelines for a green and social path” for the Netherlands, “who knows how to overcome differences, who wants to restore confidence and has a clear vision of the future of the country”.

Members of both parties agreed in July to contest the November 22 elections with a common manifesto and a single list of candidates, in a bid to concentrate centre-left votes in the fragmented Dutch political landscape.

The last four Dutch coalitions in power were led by conservative leader Mark Rutte’s formation, the People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy.

Rutte and his last four-party coalition resigned in July after failing to agree on a package of measures to curb immigration.

The country’s longest-serving Prime Minister, Mark Rutte, has announced that he will leave politics as soon as a new coalition is formed after the next general elections.
