Elon Musk announced this Wednesday (12) the launch of xAI, a new company focused on artificial intelligence (AI). Details are expected to be revealed next Friday, on Twitter, which is also owned by Musk.
“The goal of xAI is to understand the true nature of the universe,” specifies the startup on its website, without giving further details.
The team, “led by Elon Musk,” according to the page, is made up of renowned artificial intelligence experts, including some from OpenAI, as well as Google and Microsoft.
The billionaire explained on Twitter that xAI’s ambition was to “understand reality”. The letter “X” has already been used by Musk to name a Tesla car, the Model X, and even one of his children, X Æ A-12.
Several months ago, Musk admitted to purchasing a large quantity of graphics processing units (GPUs), essential for developing artificial intelligence programs, without revealing what he planned to do with them.
The company was officially incorporated in March in Nevada (U.S.), according to the state’s corporate registry, but says its technical team is based in the San Francisco area of California (also U.S. ).
In an April interview with then-Fox News host Tucker Carlson, Musk said he planned to “create a third option” among AI heavyweights, in addition to Microsoft/OpenAI and Google.
The two tech giants have developed the most advanced calling interfaces Generative AI (which can learn behavior patterns from a database).
According to the tycoon, an artificial intelligence model “that is interested in the universe would probably not destroy the human species, because we are an interesting part of the universe. We hope he thinks that.”
