The Aston Martin team was far from expected in the Italian Formula 1 GP. Besides the lack of pace, the tires were a big factor in the poor result. Fernando Alonso still managed to score points by finishing the race in P9, but Lance Stroll was only in P16.
Mike Krack, Team Principal: “Scoring a few points with Fernando was a small consolation after a tough weekend at Monza. Maybe with a few more laps we could have challenged Lando (Norris) and Alex (Albon), but there weren’t many opportunities available. Lance did a good job today. He edged out the Haas and Alpine riders, but suffered punctures in the latter part of the race. We always knew that Monza would not be a particularly pleasant track for us and we have to learn from today in AMR24. We will work hard to regain a more competitive position in Singapore.
Alonso: “It was a very difficult race today and one of the most physically demanding of the year. We will learn a lot from this weekend and we will try to be better next time. I had some hope that I could catch Lewis (Hamilton) when he got the penalty, but as soon as he got past Alex (Albon) I knew it was going to be tough. Unfortunately, Ferrari overtook us in the constructors’ championship after this result, so we have to catch up in the next race. There are still a lot of races and championship points left,” he added.
Stroll: “The car didn’t have the pace we needed today, so it was a difficult race to manage. We tried to do something a little different with the strategy and only stopped once, but the tires were wearing out towards the end of the stint so I couldn’t hold on. It was a difficult weekend for us, so we have a lot of work to do before heading to Singapore in a few weeks. »
