A group of around 100 people, including farmers and residents, occupied, this Sunday (5), an area that would belong to the Canadian mining company Belo Sun, in the town of Senator Jose Porfirio, in the southeast of Pará. The natives of the Munduruku ethnic group, from the Tapajós region, support the occupation.
The area claimed corresponds to 21 lots of the Ressaca implementation projectwhich, according to the occupiers, was provided by the National Institute of Colonization and Agrarian Reform (Incra) for the company to implement gold mining in the area known as Volta Grande do Xingu.
Farmers and local residents set up a camp with straw, tarps and nets, and communicated the action by letter to the Federal Public Defender (DPU) and the State Public Defender (DPE).
The group informed that they intended to form an agrovila and request the area for the families. The gold mining project has had its licenses suspended by two court rulings, and the DPU, according to the agency itself, requested the cancellation of the concession contract for the 21 lots of the Ressaca colony project for Belo Sun.
In the letter sent to the offices of the defenders, the occupants affirm that they must be consulted beforehand, before the project exists, otherwise the agreements involving Incra or any other body have no validity for them.
In a statement, Belo Sun reported that residents of Vila da Ressaca had sent messages to the company stating that “strange people would invade an area near the communitywhere the water harvesting system is installed”.
Also according to Belo Sun, reports indicate that the invaders have no connection with the communities of Volta Grande do Xingu, which would have left the community very worried.
The note also stressed that the mining company is at the disposal of the communities and will take the appropriate legal measures in the case, and reiterated that the “Volta Grande” project will bring many benefits, progress and security to the region.
