After almost three years, Brazil will have a driver who will race on the tracks of the most important motorsport competition in the world, Formula 1. Brazilian Felipe Drugovich will be the reserve driver for English teams Mclaren and Aston Martin.
The 22-year-old from Paraná won the Formula 2 title, the last category before Formula 1, in September last year. No Brazilian in history had won the F2 trophy, Felipe Drugovich was the first to achieve this feat.
Shortly after, “Drugo” was announced as Aston Martin’s reserve driver. This Monday morning (20), the traditional F1 team, Mclaren, announced an agreement with the Canadian team Lawnence Stroll to bring in test drivers Felipe Drugovich and Formula E champion (electric car category), the Belgian Stoffel Vandoorne.
The Brazilian’s contract is not for the whole season, the ‘orange team’ will only be able to use the Paraná native until the Italian Grand Prix on the first weekend of September. It should be noted that Mclaren now has a total of three reserve drivers, Drugovich, Vandoorne and the German Mick Schumacher, son of seven-time champion Michael Schumacher and who is also a Mercedes test driver.
It is not guaranteed that the Brazilian will participate in a GP, because for that to happen one of the main drivers must be replaced and Felipe must be chosen. But what is more likely to happen is that ‘Drugo’ uses both teams’ car in the first free practice of a Grand Prix, as is customary in recent F1 seasons.
The 2023 season of the world’s most important motorsport competition begins on March 5 and the first start location is Bahrain in the Middle East.
