G7 condemns Russia’s use of food as ‘tool of geopolitical coercion’

Tokyo, April 23, 2023 (Lusa) – The agriculture ministers of the G7 countries today condemned the use of food “as a means of destabilization and a tool of geopolitical coercion” by Russia during the invasion of the Ukraine, to whom they promised help.

“We continue to condemn in the strongest terms Russia’s illegal, unprovoked and unjustified war of aggression against Ukraine,” reads the joint statement adopted by the Group of Seven most industrialized countries in the world. The group stressed its support for initiatives by the EU, Ukraine and Turkey to open grain export routes from the war-torn territory, one of the world’s largest producers.

The G7 also pledged to “support those most affected by Russia’s militarization of food”, through measures guaranteeing access to food and fertilizer.

The seven officials also reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Ukraine’s reconstruction and recovery, sharing agricultural experiences and knowledge with Kyiv, as well as helping rebuild infrastructure and farmers’ access to finance. and seeds through international organizations.
