“How many people knew? Golfers react to shocking merger between PGA Tour and LIV Golf

Golfers reacted with surprise to the sudden news of a merger between the PGA Tour, Europe’s DP World Tour and Saudi Arabia’s controversial LIV Golf.

The news, announced in a statement on Tuesday, ends the legal dispute between the parties, and initial reaction from golfers suggests they were not told and had no say in the outcome.

“I love checking out the morning news on Twitter,” tweeted two-time winner Collin Morikawa. American PGA Tour member Michael Kim wrote: “Very curious how many people knew this deal was in the works. About 5-7 people? Player-run organization, right? Canadian Mackenzie Hughes tweeted: “Nothing like finding out via Twitter that we’re merging with a tour we said we would never do.”

Amusing and believable, Joel Dahmen tweeted a critique of LIV Golf’s team format: “I grew up being a fan of the 4 Aces. Maybe one day I’ll play for them on the PGA Tour!”

While details remain unclear, the deal will open a path back to the PGA Tour and DP World Tour for players who jumped ship for big bucks to join LIV in the past two years.

A golfer was delighted with the news. Phil Mickelson was one of the leading figures on the LIV Golf Tour and was an outspoken critic of the PGA Tour and its advocates, including Rory McIlroy.

“Amazing day today,” Mickelson tweeted.

And Brooks Koepka, another major star of LIV’s newly won PGA Championship in New York, singled out one of the Saudi tour’s most vocal critics, NBC and Golf Channel analyst Brandel Chamblee.

“Social assistance check to Chamblee,” Koepka wrote.

Byeong Hun An, from South Korea, offered an analysis of what happened in the negotiations between the parties. “I think the live teams were struggling to find sponsors and the pga tour couldn’t refuse the money. Win-win for both tours, but that’s a big [loss] For [those] who has championed the tour for the past two years.
