A traditional tourist destination, the Iguaçu Falls region was the scene of a tragedy on Tuesday (18). The body of a 58-year-old Canadian was found on the bank of the Iguaçu River, in the municipality of Foz do Iguaçu, in Parana.
He was found by employees of a company that conducts nautical excursions near the Tancredo Neves bridge, in the Brazilian part of the park.
The man fell on the Argentinian side of the park. The police are now investigating the circumstances of the death.
According to a note released by Argentine authorities, the man climbed a protective fence and fell into the water, then disappeared. It is not yet known whether he jumped or wanted to take a selfie at the time of the accident.
In addition to the accident on Tuesday, the Iguaçu Falls have already been the scene of at least three other serious accidents in recent decades.
2019 Two sisters nearly drowned on the Macuco Safari tour. They were taking part in a rafting descent when the boat capsized.
All members of the group wore life jackets and were picked up by the tour company’s rescue team. The two sisters ended up drowning more severely than the rest of the population, but they all survived.
2011 Dtwo American tourists died during a visit to the Argentinian side of the park. The ship they were on capsized with eight people on board, including crew and sailors.
It is suspected that the boat hit a rock. The other victims were stranded on a rock. The rescue operation had the participation of firefighters and the navy of both countries.
1999 A collision between two inflatable boats that were doing the Macuco Safari tour collided, in am accident that left seven dead and three injured.
The rescue of the victims lasted two hours. Six people were pulled out of the water already dead. Four wounded were taken to Santa Casa de Foz, but one died a few hours later.
