Thanks to goals from Memphis Depay and Van Dijk, the Netherlands beat the Canadian team in a friendly match to prepare for the European Championship. The match held in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, had a well-balanced first half, but throughout the match, the better technique of the Dutch team prevailed.
The match marked the debut of American coach Jesse Marsch, who managed to balance the game in the first half. Thanks to solid marking and closing down the Dutch attacking teams, Canada created a lot of difficulties for Ronald Koeman’s team.
One of the duels on the flanks of the match was marked by the Canadian full-back of Bayern Munich, Alphonso Davies, and the Dutch winger of Bayern Leverkusen, Fripong. And from the first stage, the Munich player had the advantage.
The Netherlands tried to make a quick transition and with tables on the sides of the field, but the Canadian team managed to block the attempted shots, and when the ball went towards the goal, goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair prevented the Dutch goals. In the last part of the first leg, the Dutch began to find more spaces and create the best chances so far, but without success.
After the break, the situation was identical to that at the end of the first half, with the Netherlands putting more pressure on and the Canadians feeling the physical aspect. And after just five minutes, Memphis Depay took advantage of Fripong’s fine play and opened the scoring.
Seven minutes later it was Fripong’s turn to score a fine goal, with a disconcerting dribble over Davies, the Leverkusen striker pulled it onto his left foot and hit the corner with no chance for St. Clair.
With the changes, the match showed even more the technical difference between the teams, the Dutch striker Weghorst, who had just entered, scored the third goal for the Netherlands. Another who was on the bench and came to give the final numbers on the scoreboard was defender Van Dijk, in a bad attempt by the Canadian goalkeeper, the Liverpool defender headed to score the fourth goal, 4-0 Netherlands in Rotterdam.
The Netherlands will now play another friendly match on June 10 against Finland, then make their European Championship debut against Poland on the 16th. The Canadian team faces France on June 9 and on June 20 they will make their Copa America debut against Argentina.
