Iran. EP’s call for sanctions over Mahsa Amini’s death is ‘biased’

O Foreign Ministry spokesman Naser Kanani said the resolution “contains biased and unfounded prejudices against Iran” and added that it “has been totally rejected and has no merit”.

“Despite the statements contained in the resolution, it criticizes the necessary measures against violent and organized actions and attacks on public property and the lives of people under unjust arguments of those who idealized and incited unrest, mainly in Europe” , he pointed out.

Naser Kanani denounced “hostile actions against Iran” and said the European Parliament continued to have “selective behavior against the great nation of Iran”.

“We have never seen the European Parliament, despite its ambitious pretensions, adopt a resolution against sanctions. [impostas pelos Estados Unidos contra o Irão após a retirada unilateral em 2018 do acordo nuclear de 2015]“, underlined Kanani in the press release.

For the spokesman of Iranian diplomacy, the death of Amini “is only a pretext for the extremist elements of the organization against Iran”.

The European Parliament on Thursday asked the European Union (EU) to impose sanctions on Iranian officials responsible for the death of Mahsa Amini, the young woman who died in police custody after being arrested by the so-called Iranian vice police. .

During the plenary session in the French city of Strasbourg, MEPs today adopted by a majority a resolution in which they strongly condemn the death of Mahsa Amini, calling for an “impartial, effective and above all independent investigation into the wrongful treatment and tragic murder”.

This week, the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, has already argued that the EU intends to sanction Iran with restrictive measures for the death of Mahsa Amini and for the reaction of the security forces to the demonstrations triggered by the case. of the young Iranian Kurd. .

The High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy said EU ministers would analyze possible restrictive measures when they meet in Luxembourg at the end of October.

Iranian authorities said today that Mahsa Amini’s death was not caused by “beatings” but by the consequences of an illness.

Arrested on September 13 by the morality police of Tehran for having broken the strict code of wearing women’s clothing provided for by the laws of the Islamic Republic, in particular the wearing of the veil, this Iranian Kurd died three days later in hospital .

Several opposition activists said she suffered head injuries while in detention. Iranian authorities denied any physical contact between police and the young woman and said they were awaiting the outcome of the investigation.

Her death sparked protests in the country, led by Iranian women, and solidarity actions in various parts of the world.

The protests, the largest in Iran since those held in 2019 against rising fuel prices, have been harshly suppressed.

At least 154 people have died as a result of Iranian security forces’ crackdown on protests, according to the non-governmental organization (NGO) Human Rights Iran (HRI), while an official toll puts around 60 dead, including 12 members of the security forces.
