Japan considers India ‘indispensable’ for Indo-Pacific security

“DI wrote Japan’s plan to develop a free and open Indo-Pacific. India is an indispensable partner for this,” Kishida said.

The Japanese Prime Minister revealed the plan for investment in various sectors in the region, including infrastructure, and added that Japan is working to strengthen coordination with the United States, Australia, Canada, the United States. Europe and other partners, with India “obviously essential”.

India, Japan, the United States and Australia are part of the Quad alliance, a counterweight to growing Chinese activity in the region fostering close cooperation among members.

Since 2020, relations between China and India have deteriorated, after the death of 20 Indian soldiers in clashes with Chinese troops in a disputed area of the Himalayan border.

Japan, officially a pacifist since 1945, reformed the country’s defense policy in December, saying that China, with whom it has had troubled relations in the past, represents “the greatest challenge to the region’s security”.

As a result of this reform, Japan increased its military spending and held several joint military exercises with its allied countries, including India.

The two countries have also strengthened their military cooperation with Western countries.
