Brazilian wrestling has started 2023 well. Laís Nunes won the bronze medal in the women’s 62 kg freestyle category at the Henri Deglane Grand Prix, held this Saturday (21), in Nice, France. The tournament marked the debut of national fighter and Brazilian wrestling in the pre-Olympic year.
“It was very fruitful to start the year on the podium and especially with matches at five levels. This is the first competition, so I was able to test and prepare for the next competitions. I think it will be a very good and productive year,” said Laís Nunes, who entered the competition with his own resources.
Laís made his debut in the round of 16 and was beaten 3-2 by Germany’s Luisa Niemiesch. It was the Brazilian’s only setback in the tournament. In the first fight of the repechage, Laís faced another German, Luna Rothenberg and won by technical superiority (10 to 0). In the second game of the repechage, the Brazilian again scored 10-0, this time against Sweden’s Jennica Kaellberg. Then Laís made it 10-2 over Spain’s Lidia Perez and went on to challenge for the bronze medal.
The medal match was against Sweden’s Sara Lindborg. Laís won 6-2 and put Brazil on the tournament podium. First place went to Canadian Ana Paula Godinez, second place to Bulgarian Mimi Hristova and another third place to Nigerian Esther Kolawole.
