round of 16 CEV Cup The men’s event saw the classification of two of the main contenders for the title: Modena, of the setter Bruninho, and Piacenza, of the Brazilian winging duo Leal and Lucarelli.
Without needing Bruno’s lifts, Modena beat Arkas (TUR) in two sets (25-19, 25-16 and 25-15), as well as in the first match of the series, and won among the eight best. During the match, coach Andrea Giani rotated his team a lot, which, without major difficulties, was quite successful, especially the scorer Tommaso Rinaldi. With 11 hits, he was the game’s top scorer. On the Turkish side, Canadian pointer Nicholas Hoag was the top scorer with eight.
Piacenza also defeated a Turkish club, Fenerbahce. Highlighting the scorer Yoandy Leal, with 19 points, the Italian team won in Istanbul by 3 sets to 1 (22-25, 25-23, 26-24 and 25-19). Fellow Brazilian winger Lucarelli collaborated with 11 hits. The local team had in front of Kaan Gurbuz and the French pointer Yacine Louati their safety balloons. They accounted for 14 and 13 points respectively.
On the other hand, we also had Brazilians who said goodbye to competition, such as Geneva (SUI) with the scorer Felipi Rammé. The Swiss team had won the first match, in Turkey, on a tie-break, but playing at home, were dominated and defeated in straight sets by Galatasaray. Rammé contributed a team-high 12 points. Another club that said goodbye to the tournament was Narbonne (FRA), Brazilians Danilo Gelinski and Vinicius Silveira, eliminated against Belchatow from Poland.
