Former model Linda Evangelista has settled into legal action against a company, ten months after claiming that a cosmetic procedure carried out by the company left her “permanently deformed”.
Evangelista said in September last year that he had an adverse reaction to a fat reduction procedure performed five years ago which, contrary to expectations, increased his fat cells. Last year she said she was “unrecognizable” after the procedure.
“I am happy to have reached an agreement in this case,” he wrote on Instagram.
Terms of the agreement were not disclosed. The BBC has asked the model and the company behind the procedure, Allergan, for comment.
The Canadian model said last year she underwent “two painful and unsuccessful corrective surgeries” after the slimming procedure – also known as body contouring – had the opposite effect.
Evangelista told her 1.2 million Instagram followers that was the reason she disappeared from the public eye.
“For my followers who wonder why I haven’t worked while my colleagues’ careers are thriving, the reason is that I was brutally disfigured by [um procedimento] who did the opposite of what he promised,” Evangelista wrote.
She said the side effect she experienced “not only destroyed my livelihood, but also put me in a cycle of severe depression, deep sadness and the deepest self-loathing. In the process, I became a recluse.”
The non-surgical procedure, which has grown in popularity in recent years, uses cold temperatures to reduce fat deposits in certain areas of the body.
Describing the “very rare but serious side effect” she experienced, Evangelista said it “means the fat cells at the treatment site are growing rather than shrinking”, adding: “It is not fully understood why it happens”.
Evangelista rose to fame in the 1990s, shining on luxury catwalks around the world and on the cover of fashion magazines.
She also appeared in a George Michael music video alongside Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford and Christy Turlington.
The model has kept a low profile in recent years, rarely posting new images of herself on social media.
In the few photos she has posted, her face is usually partially covered with a scarf or hat.
