End December 2022 North American sport has said goodbye to one of its great athletes. Luan RyonOlympic archery gold medalist Montreal 1976, died at 69 years old. She remains the last woman of the WE win one individual olympic gold medal in modality.
Ryon decided to take up archery at Riverside Community College (RCC) in California after learning that all the tennis lessons were full when she tried to enroll. She progressed rapidly and was inter-collegiate champion in 1974, shortly before being selected for the national team.
In Montreal in 1976, she was only 23 and she still won the US Olympic trials. She didn’t expect to win in the Canadian city, but she broke an Olympic record 2,499 points to win the gold medal, ahead of the last two world champions, Valentina Kovpan and Zebiniso Rustamova, both from The soviet union.
“She had all the mental attributes, the discipline and the competitive spirit,” said 1972 men’s Olympic champion John Williams. Just over six months later, Ryon also became world champion in Canberra, Australia, in addition to another gold medal in the team event.
In 1983, Ryon also won gold at the Pan American Games held in Caracas, Venezuela. She won gold medals in the team event and the 30 meter individual, and a silver in the 50 meter individual. She was inducted into the RCC Hall of Fame in 2010.
She died in Riverside on December 30, 2022.
