A group of undocumented immigrants are detained in the United States and a New York man faces federal charges of illegally transporting them from Canada to the state of New Hampshire.

Investigators say a tip from the Royal Canadian Mounted Police to the US Border Patrol (CBP) led to the arrest of 27-year-old Abraham Hernandez of Brooklyn, NY.

Immigration officers said they found a white Honda CRV packed with people when they stopped it last month in Pittsburgh. Upon investigation, nine occupants were found to be undocumented immigrants who had smuggled across the border from Canada.

“He (Hernandez) faces three federal counts of smuggling immigrants across the border,” prosecutor Jane Young said.

She added that Canadian authorities alerted their American counterparts after spotting people with backpacks heading south across the country towards Hall Stream Road in Pittsburg, New Hampshire. “An investigation has begun and the accused has been arrested on the US side,” Young said.

Officials said there was a Guatemalan immigrant in the group and the others were from Mexico. All admitted to not having documents to be legally in the United States.

According to an affidavit, one person told officers he had met someone in Canada to help him cross the border and would have to pay $5,000 when he arrived in the United States.

All nine were arrested and taken to the Beecher Falls Border Patrol Station for further investigation.

“At this time, the framework for this investigation remains ongoing,” Young said. “I can’t give more details,” he added.

Hernandez is being held on bail and if convicted, he faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

He will have another hearing in federal court later this month.
