The mining company Mantos Copper has presented an 89.5 million dollar project to the Chilean Environmental Assessment Service to increase the sulphide processing capacity of its Mantos Blancos concentration plant, located in the Antofagasta region. The initiative aims to increase capacity from 7.3 Mt to 10 Mt (million tonnes) per year.
The increase is equivalent to an annual average of 27,400 t/d. With it, the production of copper concentrate could increase from 175,000 t/y to 233,500 t/y from 2024.
The six-year project is expected to start in January 2023.
The main works include the replacement of the mining equipment workshop, the acquisition of additional equipment for the operation of the sulphide plant and the expansion of the ballast tank by 25.3 Mt, according to the study. of environmental impact transmitted to the authorities last week.
Canadian Capstone Mining and Chilean Mantos Copper entered into a business combination in March 2022 to ensure the operational performance of Mantos Blancos and Mantos Verdes, the latter located in the Atacama region.
Mantos Blancos is an open pit mine from which copper oxide and sulphide ores are mined to obtain copper concentrates and cathodes.
The asset’s estimated production for 2022 is between 52,000 and 56,000 t of copper.
