Medvedev, Tsitsipas and Aliassime win Australian Open opener

Vice-champion of the last two editions of the Grand Slam, the Russian beat the American Marcos Giron by 3 sets to 0

Without much fright, the Russian Daniel MedvedevGreek Stefanos Tsitsipas and the Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime won on his debut in Australian Open, on this Monday. The strongest performance came from Medvedev, vice-champion of the last two Grand Slams played in Melbourne.

The current world number eight and seventh seed defeated American Marcos Giron by 3 sets to 0, with partials of 6/0, 6/1 and 6/2. The start with “tire”, settled without giving games to the rival, gave confidence to the Russian to build the progressive victory over the 56th in the standings.

In the second round, Medvedev will face the local John Millman, in an unprecedented confrontation in the professional circuit. The home tennis player qualified by beating the Swiss Marc-Andrea Huesler by 6/7 (8/10), 7/5, 6/7 (2/7), 6/2, 6/3.

World number four Stefanos Tsitsipas also advanced with a 3-0 draw. The Greek beat Frenchman Quentin Halys by 6/3, 6/4, 7/6 (8/6). His next rival will be local Rinky Hijikata, currently 169th in the world. In his debut, the Australian beat the German Yannick Hanfmann by 4/6, 4/6, 6/3, 7/6 (7/5) and 6/3.

Félix Auger-Aliassime is the one who encountered the most difficulties at the start. The seventh in the world faced his compatriot Vasek Pospisil, former number 25 in the ranking, and needed four sets to advance: 1/6, 7/6 (7/4), 7/6 (7/3) and 6/ 3.

In the second round, Aliassime will face the Slovak Alex Molcan, responsible for the first surprise of the competition. He knocked out the Swiss Stan Wawrinka, holder of three Grand Slam titles, 6/7 (3/7), 6/3, 1/6, 7/6 (7/2), 6/4.

Another seed to enter the field on Monday morning, already overnight in Melbourne, was Britain’s Cameron Norrie. The 12th in the standings beat Frenchman Luca van Assche by 7/6 (7/3), 6/0 6/3. Norrie will now fight a duel with another Frenchman, Constant Lestienne, executioner of the Brazilian Thiago Monteiro.

Already the Italian Lorenzo Musetti (17th seed) has said goodbye to his debut. He was beaten by South African Lloyd Harris 6/4, 6/1, 6/7 (0/7), 2/6, 7/6 (7/4).

On the women’s side, seeded Madison Keys (10th) and Jil Teichmann (32nd) did not disappoint. The American beat Russian Anna Blinkova 6/4, 3/6, 6/2, while the Swiss tennis player beat Britain’s Harriet Dart, 7/5, 6/1.
