The Polish Iga Swiatek and the Spaniard Rafael Nadal started with victory this Monday (16) the Australian Open tennis.
Seeded 1 of the tournament, Nadal beat Briton Jack Draper 3-1 (7/5 2/6 6/4 6/1). In the other important results, the first day had no surprises. The Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas beat the French Quentin Halys by 3-0 (6/3 6/4 and 7/6), in the Canadian confrontation, Félix Auger-Aliassime made 3-1 to Vasek Pospisil ((1/6 7 / 6 7/6 and 6/3).
Former number 1, the Russian Daniil Medvedev won 3-0 against the American Marcos Giron (6/1 6/1 and 6/2) and the Pole Hubert Hurkacz beat the Spaniard Pedro Martinez by (7/ 6 6/2 and 6/ 2 ).
The women’s competition also had no surprises at the start. Seeded 1, Swiatek beat the German Jule Niemeier 2-0 (6/4 and 7/6). The American Jessica Pegula won 2-0 against the Romanian Jaqueline Cristian (6/1 and 6/0) and the Greek Maria Sakkari won 2-0 against the Chinese Yue Yuan (6/1 and 6/ 4).
American Coco Gauff beat Czech Katerina Siniakova 2-0 (6/1 and 6/4) and compatriot Madison Keys edged Russian Anna Blinkova 2-1 (6/4 3/6 and 6/2) ).
Monteiro and Pigossi are eliminated
The first day was not good for Brazilian tennis in Australia with the elimination of Thiago Monteiro and Laura Pigossi.
Bia Haddad Maia is the country’s only female tennis player in the singles tournament and will play in the early hours of Tuesday against Spain’s Nuria Parrizas-Diaz.
