National Civil Defense prepares for extreme cold reaching the South, Southeast and Midwest in the coming days – O Presente

The National Civil Defense, in joint action with the agencies that make up the National Civil Defense and Protection System (Sinpdec), is preparing to face the cold front that will hit the South, South-East and Center-West regions of the countries from this Wednesday (17).

In addition to the drop in temperature, the cold front can cause intense rains, storms, strong winds, frost and even snow in the mountains of Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina.

The integrated action, aligned in an online meeting held on Tuesday (16), connects all the federal agents that make up the federal system to the states, to act in the phase of preparing municipalities for the arrival of the cold wave , protecting the population from the effects of disasters. Alerts are already in effect.

One of the main objectives of the virtual meeting was to define emergency plans and care actions for each state and municipality with the most vulnerable, in particular the homeless, the elderly and children.

“This action is of paramount importance for the population, because the States can adequately prepare for each type of problem and so that they have their own response. This demonstrates the maturity of the national defense and civil protection system,” explains the surveillance and alert coordinator of the National Center for Risk and Disaster Management (Cenad), Rosane Duque Estrada Vieira. “We are increasingly anticipating events, in order to protect people’s lives. These are fundamental actions for the entire population,” he underlines.

Representatives of regional development ministries participated in the meeting; Citizenship; women, family and human rights; health and the Pátria Voluntária program, in addition to the civil defenses of the states that will be affected by the cold front.

The National Defense and Civil Protection System

The National Civil Defense and Protection System (Sinpdec) is made up of bodies and entities of the Federal Public Administration, States, Federal District and Municipalities, and public and private entities with significant performance in the field of civil protection and defense, under the centralization of the National Secretariat for Civil Defense and Protection (Sedec) of the Ministry of Territorial Development (MDR), in addition to broad participation by society civil. The objective is to avoid disasters and minimize their effects through a combination of prevention, mitigation, emergency preparedness, response and reconstruction actions.
