Non-US debutant Jones booed by Canadians at weigh-in against Lyoto – 12/09/2011

A UFC sensation in 2011 when he won the UFC light heavyweight belt, Jon Jones will have something new in his career this Saturday. It will be his first MMA fight away from home, away from the United States. And, this Friday, he felt some heat from the fans in Canada, the venue for UFC 140. During the weigh-in against former champion Lyoto Machida, the North American was booed by the crowd.

The champion entered the arena with an attitude that denoted a bit of strength. Listening to music with headphones, he did not hear the beginning of the boos, but when it came to getting on the scale, without equipment, he could not escape the shouts more in favor of the Brazilian.

The match was only attended by Lyoto Machida, with his fists raised and a serious look at his rival, holder of the belt that already belonged to him between 2008 and 2009, before his defeat against Maurício Shogun.

“It’s a great opportunity for me to fight for the second time in Toronto. I’m very well prepared and I hope to do a great job,” Lyoto said.

Jones didn’t comment on the warm reception from the Canadians – mixed with the many Brazilian fans in Toronto. “It’s a great opportunity, against a great rival. I can’t wait to get in the Octagon and do what I know,” Jones said.

Jones will be defending his second belt, having won the title in a victory over Maurício Shogun and retaining it by submitting Quinton Rampage Jackson. Machida is coming off a victory over Randy Couture at UFC 129.

In the other main bouts of the evening, Brazilian heavyweight Rodrigo Minotauro was much lighter than his rival Frank Mir, weighing 108 kg and 118 kg respectively. Among the light heavyweights, Minotouro and Tito Ortiz reached the limit of 93 kg.

The only fighter to fail on that scale was lightweight Dennis Hallman. The category is for fighters weighing up to 70kg, but he ended up with 72kg and will be fined, losing part of his purse to face John Madessi on the preliminary card.
