Norrie progresses in Queen’s, Alcaraz and Murray debuts

London, England) – The start of the ATP 500 contests from Queen’s, London saw two wins and two losses for the home players. 5 seed Cameron Norrie and guest Ryan Peniston won their first matches in straight sets, while Daniel Evans and fellow guest Jan Choinski did not make it past the first round of the tournament on grass courts.

Finalist of the tournament in 2021, Cameron Norrie beat the Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic 6/4 and 7/6 (7-5). The 27-year-old left-hander and world number 13 awaits the winner of the match between Canadian Milos Raonic, who returns to the circuit in the current grass season, and Australian Jordan Thompson, runner-up in ‘s- Hertogenbosch last Sunday.

Meanwhile, left-hander Ryan Peniston, who enjoyed a strong campaign until the quarter-finals last year, beat Frenchman Ugo Humbert 6/4 and 6/2. The current 265th in the standings can face the Danish Holger Rune, second seed and world number 6, or the North American Maxime Cressy, 42nd. They face off this Tuesday at 8 a.m.

Among the British eliminated, Daniel Evans was beaten by the American Sebastian Korda 6/4 7/5. Jan Choinski, meanwhile, lost 6/4 and 6/2 to the Italian Lorenzo Musetti, seeded 6 in the tournament. In the round of 16, Musetti faces the American Ben Shelton, who beat JJ Wolf by 7/6 (7-4) and 7/6 (7-2). Korda, on the other hand, can face his compatriot Frances Tiafoe, who came from the title in Stuttgart, or the Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp.

Big day for Argentinians

The round was also good for the Argentines. Eighth-seeded Francisco Cerundolo beat American Tommy Paul 7/6 (7-2), 4/6, 6/4. Cerundolo could face Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov or Finland’s Emil Ruusuvuori in the round of 16. Diego Schwartzman scored 6/2 and 6/4 against American Mackenzie McDonald, who came from qualifying.

Alcaraz and Murray games take place in the morning
The main seed of the tournament, world number 2 Carlos Alcaraz makes his debut this Tuesday, around 9:30 a.m. (Brasilia time). The 20-year-old Spaniard will have a youth duel against the 19-year-old Frenchman and current 62nd in the world Arthur Fils, from the qualifications. Despite the small age difference, this will be the first duel between them.

Shortly after, Andy Murray made his debut, the event’s greatest champion with five titles. Coming off of 10 consecutive victories on grass, having featured in challengers Surbiton and Nottingham in recent weeks, the Briton challenges Australian Alex de Minaur at around 11am. De Minaur, 18th in the standings, have won all three previous duels, but this will be the first time they meet on grass. The winner will face Schwartzman in the round of 16.
