Cancún (Mexico) – The start of the doubles round this Friday at the WTA Finals confirmed two more partnerships in the semi-finals of the tournament. US Open champions Canadian Gabriela Dabrowski and New Zealander Erin Routliffe finished undefeated in the Mahahual group. Australian Ellen Perez and North American Nicole Melichar-Martinez took second place in the Maya Ka’an group. Thus, the two duos will face each other in the semi-final.

Pérez and Melichar-Martinez entered the field needing to beat an already eliminated pair, American Desirae Krawczyk and Dutch Demi Schuurs. They confirmed their favoritism and received scores of 6/2 and 7/5. As a result, they finished the first phase with two victories and only one defeat, against the Belgian Elise Mertens and the Australian Storm Hunter.

Dabrowski and Routliffe beat the strong Czech partnership of Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova, 2021 finals champions and finalists last year, by 6/4 and 7/5.

The final match of the round will define second place in the group. At the top of the series, the North Americans Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula face the German Laura Siegemund and the Russian Vera Zvonareva. Despite losing their first two matches in the final, Gauff and Pegula can advance with a 2 sets to 0 victory.

Siegemund and Zvonareva need a win regardless of the score to advance. If the North Americans win in three sets, there would be a three-way tie for second place in the group, in wins and sets. In this scenario, there would be a definition of the percentage of games won.
