RJ Guide: weekend cultural tips
The cultural program in Rio de Janeiro this weekend (7 and 8) will include the finals of the samba competition in some of the most traditional schools, shows, plays and exhibitions.
Another highlight is the Rio Festival which is entering its first weekend. This year’s edition marks 25 years of the event and will offer more than 200 national and international films to moviegoers. The program includes free movie options.
At the Museum of Tomorrow, the “Vozes do Ajante” event will host performances by big names in Brazilian music, such as Criolo and Maria Bethânia.

Marking clean rooms with mud-stained boots
Born in São Gonçalo, artist Jefferson Medeiros begins another solo exhibition in his hometown: “Marking the White Rooms with Mud-Stained Boots” runs until December 17 at the Sesc Art Gallery. Curated by Lorraine Mendes, the exhibition will feature discussions on the world of work, labor exploitation and worker emancipation.
Until December, several works will be exhibited, made with materials common to the peripheral urban context. Just as in civil construction, concrete, bricks and tools are among the main raw materials for the development of the artist’s poetics. The exhibition was covered by the Sesc RJ Pulsar Notice 2022/2023.

Exhibition “House of Childhood”, by Chico Diaz
The actor Chico Diaz decided to open the doors of the house where he lived with his family, in Jardim Botânico (south of Rio), to show off one of his lesser known talents: painting. On September 15, the “House of Childhood” exhibition will open, bringing together 30 works – including paintings and drawings – in house number 318 on Avenida Alexandre Ferreira, owned by his family since 1968.

Centro Cultural Capiberibe 27 hosts Samba Pra Roda, the house’s traditional samba circle. During breaks, DJ Mandrake livens up the party.

“Vozes do Tomorrow” will premiere on October 7 and 8, Saturday and Sunday, at the Musée de Demain. The event will promote encounters between different generations of Brazilian popular music, which will take place in the Museum’s reflecting pool. On Saturday, the event presents the show “Alto da Maravilha” by Russo Passapusso with the duo Antonio Carlos & Jocafi. Then, Criolo and Leci Brandão, an important reference in samba, will perform, as well as Silva.
On Sunday, the festival continues with the meeting between Marcos Valle and Tulipa Ruiz. To complete this performance, the apotheotic presentation of Maria Bethânia with the participation of singer and composer Tim Bernardes. Both days, hot sets from DJ Tata Ogan and Petróleo Music, a duo composed of DJs, producers and musical researchers DJ Nyack and Eduardo Brechó, from the group Aláfia.

Baby do Brasil presents its new show “Baby do Brasil in Concert”, celebrating its 50 years of career. In the storyline there are songs by Caetano, Novos Baianos, as well as new songs. Tributes are also planned to Novos Baianos partners Moraes Moreira and Luís Galvão, as well as songs from eternal divas Gal Costa, Rita Lee and Elza Soares, who died in recent years.

Amazonas Dance Corps
The Corpo de Dança do Amazonas debuted this week at the Teatro da Caixa Nelson Rodrigues, in the Center, under the direction of Mário Nascimento, who brings to Rio, for the first time, new choreographies from his repertoire made up of 60 shows. The group arrives in the capital of Rio de Janeiro thanks to the Caixa cultural occupation program with the “Amazon Circulation CDA 25 years” project. “In the Shadow of the Father”, by Pedro Cardoso
The debut of the Hall Ecovilla Ri Happy space, located in the Jardim Botânico, will be with the play “À Sombra do Pai”, written, presented and directed by Pedro Cardoso. According to the actor, it is an absolute comedy that makes the audience identify with one of the characters in the story. The unpublished text by Pedro Cardoso brings the actor back on stage in a comic monologue which, like his previous works (“O Auto Speaker” and “Os Ignorantes”), is a provocation to the critical spirit of the audience and to our capacity ( or its absence) to put ourselves in the place of the other.

Rio de Janeiro Book Festival
FLIV-Rio highlights literary, political and cultural production, with the aim of providing reflection on current and future Brazil, promoting titles and authors who defend democracy, the new challenges of the world of work and the control of digital platforms.

Honoring the tradition of Paulo da Portela, the Feira das Yabás in October promotes the meeting of generations. Opening, the boys from Trio Júlio play with their samba and choro repertoire. Then, the traditional circle of Marquinhos de Oswaldo Cruz will pay homage to the birthday people of the month, Cartola and Silas de Oliveira. Closing in style, the event welcomes Grupo Casuarina singing its greatest hits.
