Last weekend, Shakira and Miley Cyrus dominated the charts and social media with their releases. The two took their heartache and turned it into hits with a hint of revenge. They weren’t the first and they weren’t the only ones. See songs with an air of revenge:
Shakira
Alongside Bizarrap, the Colombian did not want to hide it and put the name of her ex-husband, Pique, and his new girlfriend (with whom the footballer cheated on his wife), Clara, in the Lyrics of the song. “Las mujeres ya no lloran, las mujeres facturan” (“Women don’t cry anymore, women charge” in Portuguese), she declares in an excerpt from the hit “Music Sessions Vol. 53”, which in five days has reached more than 50 million plays on Spotify.
Miley Cyrus
Miley made Shakira’s words her own. She used her breakup with Liam Hemsworth to drop ‘Flowers’ and show she doesn’t need him for anything ‘I Can Love Me Better Than You Can’ until, since he released the single on Liam’s birthday.
Lady Gaga
The pop diva was not left out. In 2020, Lady Gaga released “Fun Tonight” dedicated to her ex-fiancé, Christian Carino. “I feel like I’m in a hellish prison. If I scream you leave, when I’m sad you just want to play. That’s enough, why am I staying?”, referring to how he reacted, or no, in relation to his sanity.
Selena Gomez
Already Selena Gomez has dedicated “Lose you to love” to the ex Justin Bieber. “In two months you replaced us, like it was easy. You made me think I deserved it. I needed to hate you to love me. And now it’s goodbye for us”, she says in an excerpt referring to the wedding announcement between Canadian singer and model Hailey Baldwin, just two months after breaking up with Selena, who felt used and then thrown away.
Taylor Swift
In terms of “revenge music”, Taylor Swift is an undisputed leader. In recent years, several references to past relationships have been present in the singer’s work. John Mayer, Harry Styles and Jake Gyllenhaal, won their “tribute”, for example. The latter won two songs on the same album “All too well” (which even has a short directed by Sadie Sink and Dylan O’Brien) and We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together.
Billie Elish
At 21, Billie has already turned her grief into music for revenge. Title of his latest album, released in 2021, “Happier than ever”, the eponymous composition was written for former Brandon Quention Adams, rapper known as 7:AMP. In the lyrics, Billie expresses her frustration with the relationship “all you did was make me sad […]/ you ruined everything” and ends by saying that he is “happier than ever”.
Beyonce
In 2006, Beyoncé released the album B’Day, where she already showed signs of a thirst for revenge with “Déjà Vu” and “Ring the Alarm”. Ten years later, however, came the crowning moment of Beyoncé’s “revenge” moment on the “Lemonade” album. The album discusses her husband Jay-Z’s infidelity, and the video for “Hold Up” shows QueenB hitting a car with a baton.
