After months of demands and negotiations, the Canadian women’s team can finally breathe a sigh of relief. As it competes in the Women’s World Cup, the Canadian Football Federation has reached an agreement with equal payouts in 2024, so female players will receive the same value as male athletes.
Equal pay for Canada
Although the agreement announced by the Canadian Federation is provisional and still requires some details, the decision has already been made by the entity. The players will also pay part of the salary arrears of the men’s team players. Indeed, the amount that the Canadian Federation will receive for the participation of the women’s team in the World Cup will be used to pay part of the late salaries of the men’s team.
According to information from Globo, the men’s team has not yet received the sums related to the participation in the World Cup in Qatar and is negotiating with the Federation. The male players criticized the Federation’s stance during the negotiations and said they would use the female team to reach a deal benefiting the entity.
In a note on social media, the women’s team also assured that the work was not yet finished and said: “we have been forced to choose between receiving a share of the rewards of our teams’ success in the Cups or the same salary and treatment as the men’s team. It’s a choice we shouldn’t have to make.”
In the text, the women’s team stresses the importance of the male players and states: “It’s not over yet. We and the Men’s National Team remain committed to finding a long-term solution that provides fair and equal treatment to our national teams, as well as an investment in Canadian football, but for now our team just wants to focus on soccer.
Women’s World Cup 2023
