The initiative will be divided into two phases, according to the state government. One with English lessons in the 1st year of high school for all classified students and another in exchange, for 2nd year students. There will be a selection notice per stage.
“In the first phase, 1st year high school students who have demonstrated good performance and good school attendance in the previous year will have access to an after-school English course,” the government said. Performance will be measured using the São Paulo Public Schools Performance Assessment System (Saresp).
Students enrolled in the 9th year of elementary school in 2023 who meet the prerequisites described in the law and in the selection notice can apply. Additionally, 15,000 education professionals will also be included.
The course will last two academic semesters. There will be two live lessons per week, each lasting 1.5 hours, with C1 level English teachers, as well as access to a study platform.
Students will be placed in classes with peers of the same language level. Seventy thousand students will be able to participate in this first phase, out of a total of 350 thousand eligible.
For the second phase, 1,000 of these students will be selected, with 645 places for the best student in each municipality and 355 places distributed between the Directorates of Education for the best ranked. Selection for the 2nd phase will be made through two English tests, applied during the course.
