Since August 2022, travelers wishing to discover the Mexico must apply for a visa before going there. The document is again mandatory for Brazilian tourists as part of the policy against illegal immigration to the United States, after years without obligation. And now the main question for anyone who wants to know the country is what it takes to get the Mexican visa and what step by step of this process.

But do not worry. In this article, we will clarify everything you need to know about this requirement, such as required documents, fees, how long the process takes, and who, in fact, needs a Mexican visa. This way you can plan your trip to Mexico safely and with peace of mind.

Where to apply for a Mexican visa?

This is perhaps the most important information when we talk about issuing a visa to Mexico. Indeed, only three Mexican consulates are authorized by the US government to issue the document in Brazil. So if you don’t live near any of them, you should plan a previous trip just for that purpose.

Currently, the issuance of the Mexican visa is done only by the consulates of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Brasilia. Each of them serves specific regions of Brazil. Check:

• Embassy of Mexico in Brasilia: serves tourists from Amapá, Amazonas, Federal District, Goiás, Pará, Roraima and Tocantins.
• Consulate General in Sao Paulo: serves tourists from Acre, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Paraná, São Paulo, Rio Grande do Sul, Rondônia and Santa Catarina.
• Consulate General in Rio de Janeiro: serves tourists from Rio de Janeiro, Alagoas, Bahia, Ceará, Espírito Santo, Maranhão, Minas Gerais, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Piauí, Rio Grande do Norte and Sergipe.

Step by step to get a Mexican visa

Now that you know where to apply for your Mexican visa, let’s go step by step to get the document:

Planning

The process of obtaining a Mexican visa begins with scheduling, over the internet, face-to-face service at the Mexican consulate serving the area where you live (as we have outlined above). To program, you must access the mexican system of government.

Face-to-face interview

Then, you must show up on the day and time scheduled for the face-to-face interview at the Mexican Consulate. At this stage you will also need to provide the necessary documents to apply for the visa to be presented at that time. See the details of this documentation below:

• Visa application form supplemented and signed with a recent 3×4 photograph, in color and on a white background;
• Valid passport: original and copy;
• Copy and original of at least one document proving paid activity in Brazil, property ownership or financial conditions, such as bank statements for the last three months. In the case of contractors, registration of CNPJ and DECORE must be submitted;
• Entry stamps or visas in at least 3 countries in the last year, for frequent travelers;
• Original and copy of the document proving legalization in Brazil (RNM), for non-Brazilians;

In addition, minors under 18 must be accompanied by both parents during the interview, provided with proof of parentage with originals and simple copies of the parents’ identity documents and the children’s birth certificates.

Those who do not present all the necessary documents may have their visa refused by the consulate. In this case, a new request can only be postponed after 90 days. In addition, you will have to pay the issuance costs again.

Visa issuance fees

All travelers applying for a Mexican visa must pay a fee of US$48 (R$250.42, in March/2023 quotation). It is valid for tourists, students, religious, transit and business travelers (without lucrative activities) and family economic dependents. Payment must be made by PIX on the day of the face-to-face interview, according to the latest information from the Embassy of Mexico. The proof must be presented with the other documents.

After the face-to-face interview with the delivery of all documents, including the payment of fees, the next step is to wait for the consulate to analyze the granting of the Mexican visa. This process can take up to 7 business days, according to the latest information from the Mexican Embassy in Brazil. But it is common for the response to occur within 1 day.

Mexican Visa Issuance

Who Needs a Mexican Visa?

Currently, all Brazilians wishing to enter Mexico for tourism must have a physical visa, according to the Mexican Embassy in Brazil. There are only three exceptions:

• Travelers who have a valid visa from Canada, USA, Japan, UK, Northern Ireland or any Schengen country;
• Travelers who have a document proving permanent residence in Canada, the United States, Japan, the United Kingdom, Northern Ireland, in one of the Schengen countries, in the European Union or in the Pacific (Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru);
• tourists disembarking from cruise ships.

As we mentioned, the return of the visa requirement by the Mexican government aims to end the entry of people who come to the country with the aim of trying to illegally immigrate to the United States through by its borders. Therefore, those who already have a US or Canadian visa are excluded from the rule.
