Swiatek oscillates, but gives ‘tire’ in the 3rd set and is champion in San Diego

The Polish guy Iga Swiatek fluctuated on Sunday, but confirmed the favoritism by winning the final of the San Diego Tournament, in the United States. World number 1 allowed Croatian Donna Vekic to draw in the second set, but reacted quickly in the third and final set, with a “tyre”, and prevailed with partials of 6/3, 3/6 and 6/0.

Swiatek won his eighth title of the season, now boasting 11 trophies on the professional circuit. On top of that, with the victory at the last WTA 500 level tournament of the year, she extended her already wide advantage in the leaderboard leadership. Despite the setback, Vekic will jump 30 spots on the WTA list. He will drop from 77th to 47th place.

In this Sunday’s final, the Pole entered the court with a slight advantage over her rival. The Croatian was tired as she only finished her semi-final match earlier in the day. Saturday evening, the rain prevented him from playing the duel with the American Danielle Collins until the end.

In better physical condition, Swiatek dominated the first set. And, even if his performances fell in the second half, he was able to react quickly in the third set. It was then that he won the partial without giving up any matches to his rival, thus securing the title.

MEN CHAMPIONS

The Canadian Félix Auger-Aliassime was crowned champion of the Florence Tournament, level ATP 250, this Sunday, in Italy. In the final, he edged American JJ Wolf by a 6/4 double. It was the tennis player’s second trophy on the professional circuit, in his 11th career final at ATP level. Aliassime is expected to return to the Top 10 when the rankings update on Monday.

In Gijón, Spain, Russian Andrey Rublev lifted the trophy. In the decision, the world number nine edged out American Sebastian Korda by 6/2 and 6/3. It was Rublev’s fourth title of the season and 12th of his career.

PIGOSI LOSE IN QUALI, BUT ENTERS THE MAIN KEY

Brazilian Laura Pigossi was beaten in the second and final round of qualifying for the WTA 1000 in Guadalajara, Mexico. But he got the place in the main draw as a “lucky-loser”, when a tennis player abandons the draw and gives way to the highest ranked athlete among the losers of the last qualifying round.

“I’m very happy to have this new chance to improve things that didn’t work in the game today. I want to play with the same determination and the same intensity. I like to play at altitude, I’ll try to impose my rhythm, that way I have more luck. Easy game, but I’m sure I’m ready”, commented the Brazilian, beaten by the American Asia Muhammad by 2 sets to 0, with partials of 6/2 and 6/4.

Carolina Meligeni Alves was eliminated in the second qualifying round by fellow American Caroline Dolehide in two sets: 6/4 and 6/2.

Without Carol, Brazil will be represented by Laura and Beatriz Haddad Maia in the main draw of one of the most important tournaments of this final part of the season.
